    A bethesda then is different to a bethesda now. Pretty much, a 30 year old video game absolutely knocks the socks off starfield in every way. Its got better writing, Its got soul, Its got depth, Its a game that does most things starfield does, but pre-dates it by three decades. Daggerfall feels like a game that had passion behind it, starfield feels like a junk idea written on a handkerchief and then wiped on a poop covered butthole.

    I don't agree with all of Patrician's takes on all things, but the fact that he didn't get swept up in the mass autogaslight wave that the internet had about No Man's Sky is such a huge point in his favour. Yeah, the guy mostly responsible for the game's design was treated terribly. Yeah, the fact that under the unrelenting wave of abuse a lesser person would have legitimately cut their losses and ran, while he instead buckled down and actually dragged his game up from ass valley into mehtown. But the fact remains the place it got to was still mehtown, as much as that's not as good of a story as It's Actually Good Now is. The latter being a better story made it the new e-orthodoxy though, and bucking it comes with e-consequences.

    The Wayward Realms looks like a game made for me, and as of the time of this writing there are still two days left to back it, but...$40, for early access, on Kickstarter and not a digital store, from a "new" studio (this studio has giants behind it, but still), in the current climate of "get rich quick" early-access scam games...no thanks. I need to see good quality from a finished game before I put money toward it.

    It is highly unlikely you will see my comment, let alone both of them, but whereas my first comment was made as I began the video- this one is made as I conclude watching. To re-state; I approach Oblivion from a place of adoration. That said, a lot of your criticisms are also mine! Fan and dissenter alike, we share the same frustrations about this game. I may have ADHD'd it out of existence, but I think you missed bringing up one of my most hated pet-peeves about the "accessible" nature of TeS IV. That being the constant prompts. Quest- Grab stick and bring it to Stick-lover-Jimmy Player, "Okay, I got the stick, let's go to Jimmy." Easy right? Well in Oblivion there'd be an annoying prompt with every step. You find the stick, prompt pops up, "I HAVE FOUND THE STICK THAT STICK-LOVER-JIMMY WANTS. I SHOULD PICK IT UP." You pick up the stick, prompt pops up, "I HAVE COLLECTED THE STICK FOR STICK-LOVER-JIMMY. I SHOULD RETURN TO STICK-LOVER-JIMMY AND HAND HIM THE STICK." It's aggravating. How dumb did they plan for the player to be? Many times those prompts interrupt battle as well, and will cause an archer player (me) to flop an arrow knock. Or interrupt a quicksave. Etc. It's hard to say WHY I love Oblivion. Explaining my style of roleplay and imagination and KEEN ability to ignore things about a game I dislike/discount/personally retcon all assist. Oblivion is a masterpiece trapped under incompetence, and I am just whimsical enough to forge that masterpiece for myself without need of the game giving me any real playable options to do so. Because some quality does exist, I am able to build on it and change things around as I see fit. My champion, is Medina Stalaris. Last name inherited. An Argonian ex-slave from Vvardenfell who was rescued by my version of the Nereverine (Culvar Ni'isa), who after the events of Morrowind would go on to lead charges of anti-slavery in Morrowind. Medina is sent via ship (with many other freed slaves) around the coast, bound for Leyawiin. On the way she overhears two guards aboard plotting to re-sell some slaves to re-slaver merchants at a rural port, she loses it, and daggers their throats out. However, no other officials aboard were part of that plot, and to them, this Argonian woman just killed two imperial guardsmen. Hence, she is immediately slapped in irons, brigged, and personally bound for the imperial city dungeons. See, Oblivion gave me THAT much to work with, at least, especially being so close to Morrowind in the timeline (helped a lot). Skyrim is harder for me. It is so far-flung from the other games and even less well written/executed than Oblivion (imo at least) that I've never been able to make a character I connect with as much as I do Medina. All that said- I HATE the fast travel reliance with a passion. That is my most hated crutch in Oblivion. I am passionate about world conveyance, geography, etc. Oblivion is worse than late-season Game of Thrones. Granted, magic; I try to explain away that Medina travels via the mages guilds. Which all, in my mind's eye, have connected portals (they should in Cyrodiil). To that end, I try to travel to a Mages Guild in real time before fast-travelling, with minor exceptions. I will also travel to a port before fast travelling, imagining that I chartered a ship. In those cases I will tend to only travel to other waterfront areas. I use Better Cities mods, so Bravil and Leyawiin in my game ACTUALLY HAVE PORTS. Shame on you, Bethesda. I could go on and on! I'll wrap it up with, from an Oblivion fan, I appreciated this effort. Great video!

    The immediate problem of "good" graphics for wayward reals is that the teaser vids show daggerfall combat, which like all bethesda style melee systems is exceptionally dated. It's missing the point of bringing back the world mechanics of the older games with the advancements of current game mechanics. People have been trying to turn M&B into a dungeon delver for over a decade and that is the opportunity a project like this should be showcasing.

    • @Scowleasy
      @Scowleasy 22 години тому

      Daggerfall’s combat is more acceptable because it’s nostalgic, you’re experiencing a relic from decades ago. A modern game with Daggerfall combat is just… a modern game with 30 year old combat.

    You guys might be interested in my WIP small-scale RPG, definitely more comparable to Morrowind than Daggerfall, although certainly smaller than Morrowind. The steam page is pretty bad right now, but if you're interested it's Robin Hood Shadow of Nottingham. The "key selling point" I'd love to implement ideally is a sort of "death alternative" system where instead of dying, if you lose a fight your character's experience goes on, the story changes insofar as you now need to escape, and depending on your faction reps you might respawn in safety, you might get ransomed, or you might be a bandit's prisoner or something.

    16:09 - Daggerfall Unity ABSOLUTELY still have this problem. I've had to noclip to find people in quests, because they spawned in a room in the void. I have the screenshot to prove it. Also, Daggerfall loves putting quest NPCs in dungeon cages surrounded by monsters, but they don't need you to rescue them. They just want you to go fetch their groceries. The procedurally generated quests are worse than Skyrim's Radiant Quests. That said. I'm really enjoying Daggerfall for the most part, but it feels really aged and lacks focus.

    Julian having such a hard stance on the art style, or rather lack thereof, is definitely very strange. I'd honestly prefer lesser graphical fidelity with consistent, stylized art, rather than an attempt at photorealism that would likely fall in many parts to the uncanny valley, and age like milk.

    18:55 - Yeah, no, that is BS. The "exceptions", mainline quest dungeons, have hallmark leftover bits that are a dead giveaway of being generated. It's just that they ALSO contain 1-2 unique modules on top of that randomness. So they're not handcrafted throughout - they only contain some handcrafted (or rather: specifically crafted) modules.

    • @saltyshrimppasta
      @saltyshrimppasta День тому

      This is true, and I remember wanting to interject that somewhere but I don’t believe I found a good opportunity to. Total rng and procedural generation with "infinite" playtime, repeat content, radiant ai pushed to the max, with a horribly bland main story in which you are simultaneously a god yet unable to do anything yourself or for yourself.
